June 17th is a date you should know, for two reasons…
First,
June 17 marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ final live concert in 1966.
To commemorate it, tonight, in OC (Costa Mesa), at 8 pm, PACIFIC SYMPHONY presents “CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR” at the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. See the 8 pm listings.

Second, and more recently…
In the predawn hours of June 17, 1972, a security guard discovered that duct tape had been applied to tape-open a locked door leading from a parking garage level to a stairwell. He called the police, who responded with the nearest unit, which was a pair of plain clothes detectives.
Together, they climbed the staircases until encountering another taped-open door. That led them onto a floor of offices in the Watergate Hotel and Office Building in Washington, D.C.
There, they caught burglars planting electronic bugging devices inside the offices of the Democratic National Committee. The burglars had, in their pockets, money and contact information that came from CREEP, the Republican’s Committee to ReElect the President. CREEP was the campaign organization of sitting President Richard Milhaus Nixon.
It was a sad, tragic, and prolonged affair as one revelation followed another, of dirty tricks, criminal acts, cover-ups, money laundering, other break-ins, and more. Eventually, Nixon became the only president ever to resign, something he had to do to avoid conviction in an impeachment. Nearly "All the President's Men" went to federal prison. Nixon avoided that fate because his hand-picked successor, President Gerald Ford, pardoned him for all that he did with no need to reveal anything.
The enduring joke was, "Every Milhaus has its water gate." And it all started with a little piece of duct tape, on this day, 43 years ago.

8 pm BROOKE RAMEL with guest star HARRIET SCHOCK at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
BROOKE RAMEL is one of the most successful independent artists of the last 10 years. She has sold over 50,000 CDs, placed 50+ songs in tv/film, performed thousands of live shows and produced six original albums. In addition to performing solo and headlining with her own band, Brooke has opened for many legendary artists and some of her greatest inspirations – Shawn Colvin, Marc Cohn, Raul Malo, Colin Hay, David Wilcox, Melissa Manchester, Lisa Loeb, Nancy Griffith, David Gates, and Bill Medley, to name a few. In 2006, Brooke sang background vocals for Ziggy Marley's album, "Love Is My Religion". That year, she was also a featured performer on an episode of the PBS series, "Branson Jubilee", which aired nationwide.
+
Reemerging after a hiatus to be a wife and mother, Brooke teamed up with Grammy Award-winning producer and Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman and world class musicians to record her first album since 2004. Joining Brooke on the album are bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, John Lennon), guitarist Jeff Pevar (Crosby Stills & Nash, Marc Cohn, Ray Charles), drummer Aaron Sterling (John Mayer), 3-time Grammy Award winning cellist Eugene Friesen, and The Webb Sisters on background vocals (Leonard Cohen, Sting). Newly gained perspectives are reflected in Brooke’s strongest, most honest and acoustic recording to date.
+
Opening with her big band is Brooke’s friend, HARRIET SCHOCK, well-known L.A. songwriter (Grammy-nominated "Ain’t No Way To Treat A Lady"), a recording artist with five solo albums, a performer, a songwriting consultant, teacher and lecturer as well as an author. Schock’s songs have been recorded by such diverse artists as Smokey Robinson, Roberta Flack, Helen Reddy, Lee Greenwood, Johnny Mathis, Nancy Wilson, Manfred Mann, Carl Anderson, Vesica Pisces, and the Little Mermaid. Her feature film and TV song credits include "The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking," "Delta Force II," ABC’s "The Secret Garden," Motown’s "The Last Dragon" and "The Real Life Adventures of Santa Claus," Her live concert is full of humor, warmth and emotionally impactful songs. Accompanying herself on keyboard, Schock is joined by Joe Lamanno on bass, and singers Corwyn Travers and Gary Floyd.

Perhaps our favorite quote about Live Oak comes from a musician who has played there and who asked us not to reveal his name. He says, “People should realize this isn’t all folk music. It’s all highly proficient, highly creative and a joy to hear, and it’s really very eclectic, just like what the station plays on the air. Ha! It’s what somebody needs to tell KCRW is GOOD eclectic music, since L.A. radio listeners have no clue except for all the music lovers who come up here every year for this happy festival!”
+
Finally, the schedules work, and there is no conflict with the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” which was the weekend before this.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first main stage performance at 2 pm, and go right through Sunday evening at 8:30 pm. Fri & Sat night shows run late on one or the other of the stages with lights, plus there’s a workshop stage in the oak forest that’s active during daylight hours. The stages have reliably good sound. There are workshops, there’s good food from vendors, interesting merch vendors, lots of hippie heaven dancing under the giant oak trees, plus jamming in the campgrounds, and a fine, friendly ambiance. Take your wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, low back folding chair, blankets, and warm duds for chilly evenings.

Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold that festival to the Ontario Convention & Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the economic benefits it brought to the community). Hence, we have this new bluegrass festival, held a week after “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Take UV-blocking sunglasseses, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, your low back folding chair, a blanket, and warm duds for chilly evenings.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first performance at 3 pm, and conclude about 3 pm Sunday so you’ll have plenty of time to drive home. (Note that Amtrak is an option from L.A. Union Station or Fullerton to Victorville, but it’s the Chicago train, once per day, each way.)

Festival elsewhere…
Thu-Sun, Jun 18-21,
FESTIVAL, in Colorado:
42nd annual "TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" has a main stage like no other: the view to the left of the stage is a six-hundred foot waterfall.
+
The annual festival coincides with the Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year which begins the Colorado summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, guitars, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."
+
This event coined the term, "Festivarians" to describe the attendees — most of them devotees — who make the annual solstice trek to Telluride for the superb music and all that goes with it. And it has its own culture.
+
They'll tell you, "The 42nd Annual festival promises a magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances," and they are not exaggerating.
+
Foremost among those is the always-anticipated opening-night Thursday set by the Telluride House Band. That being the annual session by Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Bowers, & Stuart Duncan. Wowwww.
+
And there ARE still some single-day Thursday tickets.
+
This is the music fest that rightfully boasts bringing "Beloved Festival veterans and inspiring new talent. The Telluride royalty of virtuosic bluegrass superpickers, soulful songwriters, and some of the biggest stars in the rootsy Americana landscape and well beyond."
+
The festival is built around the many artists that have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound, as the weekend is sprinkled with inspired sets from Peter Rowan, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Tim O'Brien, and of course the "King of Telluride," Sam Bush. These artists come together for the festival's epic set from the Telluride House Band.
+
Nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West.
+
Founded in 1875, the Victorian charm of the town is protected as a National Historic Landmark District. The town of Telluride (elevation 8,750') is connected to the modern resort community of Mountain Village (elevation 9,450') via a free commuter gondola.
+
The San Juan Mountains are the highest concentration of 14,000-foot peaks in the US. Activities in and around Telluride include mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, numerous hot springs, historic ghost towns, and whatever else your sense of adventure shows you. Popular hikes from town are the Bridal Veil Falls - the highest cascade in Colorado - and the 2-mile hike up to Bear Creek Falls, beginning right behind the festival stage.
+
The 2015 Main Stage Schedule will convince you to put this festival on your list for next year, whether or not you're going to experience it now.
