Things get underway Friday with the first main stage performance at 2 pm, and go right through Sunday evening at 8:30 pm. Fri & Sat night shows run late on one or the other of the stages with lights, plus there’s a workshop stage in the oak forest that’s active during daylight hours. The stages have reliably good sound. There are workshops, there’s good food from vendors, interesting merch vendors, lots of hippie heaven dancing under the giant oak trees, plus jamming in the campgrounds, and a fine, friendly ambiance. Take your wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, low back folding chair, blankets, and warm duds for chilly evenings.

Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold that festival to the Ontario Convention & Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the economic benefits it brought to the community). Hence, we have this new bluegrass festival, held a week after “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Take UV-blocking sunglasseses, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, your low back folding chair, a blanket, and warm duds for chilly evenings.

Things get underway Friday with the first performance at 3 pm, and conclude about 3 pm Sunday so you’ll have plenty of time to drive home. (Note that Amtrak is an option from L.A. Union Station or Fullerton to Victorville, but it’s the Chicago train, once per day, each way.)

Annual “HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL” runs for over a week, with live music performances in various genres (some are folk-friendly), in venues large and small, all over the Hollywood end of L.A.

There’s also local and international theater. The ever-expanding event hosts around 275 shows each year. You’ll find everything from one-person shows, to new musicals with chorus lines, to comedies, to edgy dramas. Annual “MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES” 2015 happens all over the L.A. Basin, in formal and informal venues, indoors and out. The event’s website is a somewhat frustrating experience, professing to list all the performers or spaces by genre, but then omitting most of them from its categorical listings. We attempt to improve on that for you, here.

Deriving from the original French “Fete de la Musique,” June 21 is recognized as International “Make Music Day” and is celebrated by some 800 cities in 110 countries all over the world. In Los Angeles, dozens of neighborhood venues will showcase local musical artists as part a city-wide celebration of sound called Make Music LA.
+
Annual "MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES" is a FREE event inspired by the French "Fete de la Musique" (and the success of the annual "Make Music Pasadena," which happened last weekend). This year, 172 acts, across all genres of music, are performing live in dozens of venues spanning the map from Santa Monica to Pasadena.
+
But that's not the whole story, or even its essence. In France, the whole idea is for musicians of all levels to get out and "make music" on the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, because it's the ONE day each year when busking is not illegal in France.
+
Thus, "Make Music L.A." features "Mass Appeal" events for players of specific instruments to join-in, ranging from ukulele to harmonica to saxophone.
+
Their website has times and locations for SOME artists and SOME performances, with descriptions of some of those artists — but if you click, "Folk," you'll get only some of them. (There are many more than the nine who show-up on the folk tab.) So stick with us, here, to straighten it out for you.
+
There are categories for FOLK, AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS, ROOTS, and SINGER-SONGWRITER playing MMLA — but too many of the artists and bands in those categories are not integrated into the event’s websites to show when and where they are playing.
+
Their two websites do have info; some of it connects to band and artist bios, some connects venues to schedules, and some of it just does not. The two sites are

You’ll have more success by using our list to find a band you want to hear, then googling tham to see where they’re playing. The sites list 172 acts but do not integrate more than half of them into the database.

42nd annual "TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" has a main stage like no other: the view to the left of the stage is a six-hundred foot waterfall.

The annual festival coincides with the Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year which begins the Colorado summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, guitars, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."

This event coined the term, "Festivarians" to describe the attendees — most of them devotees — who make the annual solstice trek to Telluride for the superb music and all that goes with it. And it has its own culture.

They'll tell you, "The 42nd Annual festival promises a magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances," and they are not exaggerating.

Foremost among those is the always-anticipated opening-night Thursday set by the Telluride House Band. That being the annual session by Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Bowers, & Stuart Duncan. Wowwww.

These artists come together for the festival's epic set from the Telluride House Band.

Nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West.

Founded in 1875, the Victorian charm of the town is protected as a National Historic Landmark District. The town of Telluride (elevation 8,750') is connected to the modern resort community of Mountain Village (elevation 9,450') via a free commuter gondola.

The San Juan Mountains are the highest concentration of 14,000-foot peaks in the US. Activities in and around Telluride include mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, numerous hot springs, historic ghost towns, and whatever else your sense of adventure shows you. Popular hikes from town are the Bridal Veil Falls - the highest cascade in Colorado - and the 2-mile hike up to Bear Creek Falls, beginning right behind the festival stage.

On Sunday and Monday, The Kingston Trio will be filmed in concert by Desert C.A.M. Studios (Chip Miller) and Terrel Cass Productions (both are award-winning directors/producers) at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, situated across the street from the Capitol Records Building (which the Trio helped to pay off in the late '50s!). The Kingston Trio will be joined by founding member Bob Shane (who seldom performs with them), Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), Al Jardine (founding Beach Boy), Trini Lopez, Barry McGuire, The Limeliters and Josh Reynolds (Nick’s son) for two exciting nights of concerts.

The Kingston Trio is taping this concert in Hollywood for TV, which is slated to become a PBS pledge special, in conjunction with a documentary being produced about the Trio and its impact upon folk and music at large. Sunday June 21st is a full taped dress rehearsal concert, and Monday June 22nd is the full taped concert. Show time both nights is at 7:30 pm, doors open at 6:30 pm.

This is very likely to be the last time anyone outside of the Phoenix area will be able to see Bob Shane perform live.

On Sunday, several things happen. First, for the Sun’s “local noon” appearance at its highest position in the sky all year, the Sun’s projected image crosses the engraved meridian arc of the Gottlieb Transit Corridor on the west side of the Griffith Observatory. Later, the northernmost sunset and the end of the longest day of the year align with an engraved marker and stone line laid into pavement on the terrace. The solstice sunset occurs at 8:07 pm. Expect it to get crowed on this special day.
