NEW CONCERT SERIES WITH IMPRESSIVE ARTISTS DEBUTS TODAY ON YOU-TUBE

June 16th brings the debut of “LIVE AT LOCKETT'S - A LIVING ROOM CONCERT SERIES”, on YouTube. The idea is sort of like a house concert you watch on your computer, but with excellent sound mixing and production.

It’s “an intimate concert series featuring Los Angeles musicians and poets performing and filmed in Christopher Lockett's living room,” says series producer, Christopher Lockett.

This first season features 23 performers from L.A.'s eclectic roots music and poetry scenes.

Chris says it’s “One camera, one lens, no zooms, no cuts, not even a microphone in frame - just a lone shotgun mic overhead in a c-stand. Nothing between the performer and the audience. The performers are rooted in a tradition, but not bound by it.”

This first season features performances by CLAIRE HOLLEY, DONNA LYNN CASKEY, RAY DOYLE, PAUL ZOLLO, BUDDY ZAPATA, SHAUN CROMWELL, JAMES HOULAHAN, CASHEW & CLEARY, ROD MELANCON, KATY J, BEN REDDELL, FERGHEART, EDIE MURPHY, PAM WARD, S.A. GRIFFIN, ellyn & robbie, HOLLYWOOD BLUES DESTROYERS, BRIAN WHELAN, YVONNE de la VEGA, DAN JANISCH, SUNNY WAR, De'ANZA, and CHRISTOPHER LOCKETT himself.

Like a lot of new web-based “tv,” the entire series goes up today to binge-watch or ration yourself at your leisure. It’s all available at:

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND’s “BLACK SHEEP” DROPS TODAY

Out today in national release (June 16, 2015), is the new full-length studio album by YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND (YMSB), titled “Black Sheep,” on Frog Pad Records. It marks the first time in the band's history that they're utilizing, throughout an entire record, the conventional five-piece instrumental arsenal of bluegrass introduced in the 1940s: guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass.

On May 12, Yonder announced its new band member line-up as they “move forward” into spring and summer festival season, and prepared to tour the new record. The lineup features the additions of violinist ALLIE KRAL and mandolin virtuoso JACOB JOLLIFF, joining founding members ADAM AIJALA (guitar, vocals), DAVE JOHNSTON (banjo, vocals) and BEN KAUFMANN (bass, vocals).

Kral and Jolliff appear on the new album, and have toured with the band over the past year.

It's apparent that “Black Sheep” is the work of a new Yonder Mountain String Band. While it's immediately recognizable as YMSB music, there's undeniably a raw aesthetic to the studio tracks -- a sense of daring is embedded in both the instrumental interaction between these five singular musicians and in the lyrical content of each song. With the band's 17th anniversary coming this summer, YMSB continues to redefine bluegrass music as they expand the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n' roll and improvisation.

Yonder released two “instant grat” tracks through media outlets, and you can listen at the links:

Commencing in May 2015 and running throughout the rest of the year, YMSB performs at premier music festivals and venues across the country.

THE SILVER LAKE CHORUS HAS SELF-TITLED ALBUM, OUT TODAY

Los Angeles indie-choral group The Silver Lake Chorus has a full new record available today, after premiering a track written specially for them by L.A. duo Tegan & Sara. That tracks is "Hold Up For" and it’s on video at Stereogum, which says of the song, "It’s simple, but it’s probably the cutest thing you’ll see all week. Heart-eyed emoji times three." That sets a marker at one end of what they do. It’s available at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaciIKrNFOg

That teaser prepared the world for “The Silver Lake Chorus” which drops today, June 16, on Six Degrees Records. Produced by Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee, The Silver Lake Chorus' new full-length features big choral arrangements of rare and new tracks written for the chorus by Sia, The Bird and The Bee, The New Pornographers, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), and many more.

"Heavy Star Movin'" (written by Wayne Coyne & Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips) premiered at Consequence of Sound, who said "the hauntingly beautiful track evokes a surreal, out-of-body experience, as though one’s consciousness is tumbling aimlessly through a color-splashed alternate universe."

The Silver Lake Chorus has been embraced by Stereogum, Pitchfork, and Paste Magazine, and the latter said, "With deeply rooted harmonies and varied voices, TSLC offers original songs that rightfully require more than one listen for the sole purpose of catching all they have to offer."

Producer Ben Lee first heard the chorus sing their arrangement of Beck's "Lonesome Tears" at an early rehearsal and was blown away by how the song had been "reinvented into this massive Russian Gregorian chant." Immediately, he got an idea: instead of singing covers, Lee suggested the chorus take a completely original indie rock approach to the ancient choral art form. He signed on to produce their debut album and reached out to other artists and friends, asking them to write new music for the chorus. Songs soon poured in from artists like Aimee Mann, The Bird and the Bee, John Roderick (The Long Winters), A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers), and many more.

Because it’s such an omnibus, here’s the tracklist:
1. From The Snow-Tipped Hills (composed by Justin Vernon/Bon Iver)
2. Hold Up For (composed by Tegan & Sara)
3. Break It Down (composed by Inara George & Greg Kurstin/The Bird and The Bee)
4. Heavy Star Movin' (composed by Wayne Coyne & Steven Drozd/The Flaming Lips)
5. Same Song (composed by John Roderick/The Long Winters)
6. Nervous Soul (composed by Ben Gibbard/Death Cab For Cutie)
7. Salted Wound (composed by Sia, Track & Field and Oliver Kraus)
8. Overboard (composed by Ben Lee)
9. Home Come Home (composed by Heather Ogilvy and Michael B. Wells)
10. Wreckage (composed by Carl Newman/New Pornographers)
11. Easy To Die (composed by Aimee Mann & Paul Bryan)

ALBUM REVIEW:
PAUL ZOLLO’s “Universal Cure”

by Paula McMath

“'Nobody knows the way you feel when raindrops fall right through you.” This line and the clown disguise, of the cover image, are apt touch-stones for “Universal Cure,” Paul Zollo’s latest offering to songwriting. In and through these songs, Zollo sings of the fringes, “the ragged edges” of town, the forgotten, and the ghosts. The words and melodies are sung with a yearning that says; Can you see me? Can you hear me? Can you look behind this painted face to fathom who I really am — even though I hide from you in plain sight? Am I known? Will I be remembered? From behind the masks of a cast of characters, Zollo asks these questions while speaking, in lucid detail, about a kind of invisibility and alienation that rings true and is almost too familiar. The songs provide a rich and specific backdrop, a place in which we suddenly find ourselves.

“You can hear the heavy footsteps of the overworked and weary” — “forever between trains.” Even out of context, phrases of these lyrics provide ripe territory for projection and self-insertion. Zollo speaks for “everyman” who has struggled with missed opportunity, mistakes that can’t be undone, or trajectories that are beyond one’s control as in a line like, “all the wrong turns he ever took are pages torn from a telephone book.”

Musically, this album is a study in prosody. The songs are well arranged, expertly played and produced — all in the unswerving direction of serving each song. Zollo sings them with poignancy, conviction and sometimes a charming, self-deprecating tickle of humor. Each song is “six pounds of sugar in a five pound sack.”

Nothing now is like it used to be back when gravity still mattered.” Perhaps, this line speaks to how much songs still matter, how much music matters, and how much it will continue to matter — music itself is the “universal cure.” With years of writing and studying the art of song and, in part, from speaking with some of the greatest songwriters of our time, Paul Zollo proves himself to be among them. it will continue to matter — music itself is the “universal cure.” With years of writing and studying the art of song and, in part, from speaking with some of the greatest songwriters of our time, Paul Zollo proves himself to be among them.

EDITOR’S NOTE: On Sunday, June 28, in L.A., time tba, you can catch “SONGWRITERS ON SONGWRITING LIVE” with the bestselling author of the book of that title, PAUL ZOLLO. Paul is hosting legendary Chicago blues phenomenon CORKY SIEGEL, whom he calls, “one of the stars of my youth.” The event is at The Songwriting School of Los Angeles. The public can attend; we’ll have details soon in our “Ticket Alerts” section. Corky Siegel, says Paul, “emerged from the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band to become a solo act back when I was in high school and would thrill at any chance to hear him. Amazing pianist, remarkable harmonica player and great songwriter. A night with Corky will be amazing. Thanks to his friend and mine James Lee Stanley for making this happen.”

Perhaps our favorite quote about Live Oak comes from a musician who has played there and who asked us not to reveal his name. He says, “People should realize this isn’t all folk music. It’s all highly proficient, highly creative and a joy to hear, and it’s really very eclectic, just like what the station plays on the air. Ha! It’s what somebody needs to tell KCRW is GOOD eclectic music, since L.A. radio listeners have no clue except for all the music lovers who come up here every year for this happy festival!”
+
Finally, the schedules work, and there is no conflict with the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” which was the weekend before this.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first main stage performance at 2 pm, and go right through Sunday evening at 8:30 pm. Fri & Sat night shows run late on one or the other of the stages with lights, plus there’s a workshop stage in the oak forest that’s active during daylight hours. The stages have reliably good sound. There are workshops, there’s good food from vendors, interesting merch vendors, lots of hippie heaven dancing under the giant oak trees, plus jamming in the campgrounds, and a fine, friendly ambiance. Take your wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, low back folding chair, blankets, and warm duds for chilly evenings.

SWBA BLUEGRASS KIDS
And more
+
Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold that festival to the Ontario Convention & Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the economic benefits it brought to the community). Hence, we have this new bluegrass festival, held a week after “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Take UV-blocking sunglasseses, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, your low back folding chair, a blanket, and warm duds for chilly evenings.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first performance at 3 pm, and conclude about 3 pm Sunday so you’ll have plenty of time to drive home. (Note that Amtrak is an option from L.A. Union Station or Fullerton to Victorville, but it’s the Chicago train, once per day, each way.)

+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

Sat & Sun, Jun 20 & 21,
FESTIVAL,
in Long Beach:
10 am-7 pm Annual “BIG IRISH FAIR & MUSIC FESTIVAL” has moved around the calendar, in recent years, and now it returns with performances by bigtime groups, in El Dorado Regional Park III, 7550 E Wardlow Dr, Long Beach 90815.

Festival elsewhere…

Thu-Sun, Jun 18-21,
FESTIVAL, in Colorado:
42nd annual "TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" has a main stage like no other: the view to the left of the stage is a six-hundred foot waterfall.
+
The annual festival coincides with the Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year which begins the Colorado summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, guitars, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."
+
This event coined the term, "Festivarians" to describe the attendees — most of them devotees — who make the annual solstice trek to Telluride for the superb music and all that goes with it. And it has its own culture.
+
They'll tell you, "The 42nd Annual festival promises a magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances," and they are not exaggerating.
+
Foremost among those is the always-anticipated opening-night Thursday set by the Telluride House Band. That being the annual session by Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Bowers, & Stuart Duncan. Wowwww.
+
And there ARE still some single-day Thursday tickets.
+
This is the music fest that rightfully boasts bringing "Beloved Festival veterans and inspiring new talent. The Telluride royalty of virtuosic bluegrass superpickers, soulful songwriters, and some of the biggest stars in the rootsy Americana landscape and well beyond."
+
The festival is built around the many artists that have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound, as the weekend is sprinkled with inspired sets from Peter Rowan, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Tim O'Brien, and of course the "King of Telluride," Sam Bush. These artists come together for the festival's epic set from the Telluride House Band.
+
Nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West.
+
Founded in 1875, the Victorian charm of the town is protected as a National Historic Landmark District. The town of Telluride (elevation 8,750') is connected to the modern resort community of Mountain Village (elevation 9,450') via a free commuter gondola.
+
The San Juan Mountains are the highest concentration of 14,000-foot peaks in the US. Activities in and around Telluride include mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, numerous hot springs, historic ghost towns, and whatever else your sense of adventure shows you. Popular hikes from town are the Bridal Veil Falls - the highest cascade in Colorado - and the 2-mile hike up to Bear Creek Falls, beginning right behind the festival stage.
+
The 2015 Main Stage Schedule will convince you to put this festival on your list for next year, whether or not you're going to experience it now.
