We’ll let renowned contra dance, square dance, and old time dance caller Susan Michaels tell you about it, just as we learned it from her.
Hello Friends of The Foot:
This is Susan Michaels writing here … your friendly neighborhood caller. By now I am sure you’ve heard that our beloved Triple Chicken Foot is moving along to new towns and new projects and will be no more. For me, this is sad, sad news. Triple Chicken Foot changed my life in profound ways. They took my hand and said hey come along with us and we’ll start a revolution… a Squarevolution. With Kelly and Ben and Mike I’ve spent almost a decade calling square dances in the unlikeliest places – in a parking garage, art gallery, traffic island, under the Spring St. Bridge, in a corn field that was not a cornfield, at bars and restaurants and parks and playgrounds … and over the years we created dance magic for thousands of people who didn’t know how much joy there is in the simple act of holding hands in a circle until we showed up. Yeah sure, when I met Triple Chicken Foot I had already been calling dances for almost 20 years, but they were the ones who helped me find my “calling.” I am sure you’re not surprised to know there are tears in my eyes as I write this…
So here’s the deal. Our last dance and jam is this Saturday, June 13 from 6-9pm. We’re playing for the opening of a new community center in Rowland Heights with a dance from 6-7:30 and a jam and opening dancing from 7:30 -9. It is a FREE event.
I know… it’s a weird time on a Saturday in an inconvenient location … but I hope some of you will come out for even just a little while to help us go out with a bang. If we have a few friends there to make music with us and hold hands in a circle it will make the parting a little more sweet. Please, come help us close an important chapter in the story of L.A. Old Time and then start a new one…

Here at the Guide, our admiration for Triple Chicken Foot – always “The Foot” to their fans – goes back to the days when they first got together, and we were on the radio on Los Angeles, and we begged them to record something so we could play it on-air. After that came much acclaim for the band, including their ten years of producing the “LOS ANGELES OLD TIME SOCIAL,” the annual three-day lead-in to the long-running TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL. Topanga has even set aside stage time each year for “The Best of the Old Time Social,” which always concluded the night before the big TBFC Sunday. No word on the future of the Old Time Social, or any more on which ways the band members will go when they depart. But if you can get there Saturday night, go out and enjoy one last session of raucously fun old time string band music from these masters.

• THE FIRST DOCUMENT IN HUMAN HISTORY GUARANTEEING HUMAN RIGHTS: Monday marks 800 years since the Magna Carta was extracted from the king of England
It’s the grandfather of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the United Nations Declaration of Human Freedoms. Ross Altman, honored a few years back with the TBFC “Music Legend Award,” has both the academic and musical credentials to make that meaningful for everyone, and he does that in a pair of thematic performances on Saturday.
Ross writes, in his recent feature story for FolkWorks, "Runnymede, England, June 15, 1215. 800 years ago, King John’s Barons forced him to sign the founding document of English liberty — 'The Great Charter,' 'The Magna Carta.'
"Written in Latin, it was the first organized effort to drive a wedge between Noblemen and the King, guaranteeing to British Nobility rights which had formerly been allocated only to the King. That was the beginning of such rights eventually making their way down to the bottom rung of the social order and permeating a democratic society.
"That document now resides in the Bodleian Library of the British Museum; I have a framed replica which I found a number of years ago at an Out-of-the-Closet thrift shop. Outside of my Gibson J-200 guitar it is my most treasured possession—a daily reminder of the human rights that became the animating principle of the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights."

The late Don Tucker built this into such a wonderful festival that it was acclaimed by national publications as one of the finest family festivals in America. Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold the festival to the Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the business it brought). Hence, this new bluegrass festival, held a week ahead of “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Susie and her band are celebrating the release of their new CD, but the death of Jean Ritchie on June 1 has made this much more. Ritchie, a few years back, gave her endorsement to Southern Cal-based, Kentucky-born musician SUSIE GLAZE. The Pasadena Folk Music Society already had this concert booked with Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band for June 13, and we can expect some of Ritchie’s songs in tribute.

Susie Glaze sang for Ms. Ritchie at a CD release concert in May, 2014 in Berea, Kentucky. Also on the bill were Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon. “Many fans have told me, that on the Jean Ritchie songs, they can’t tell if it is me or Jean singing,” says Glaze, “Jean herself has told me the same thing.”
