Friday through Sunday music events are plentiful, led by the (mostly) free annual “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA,” festival, based on the French “Fete de la Musique.”
Some will have France on their minds on Saturday, anyway. June 6th is the anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944 that broke Hitler’s “Atlantic Wall” and finally led to the liberation of all the nations of Western Europe conquered and occupied by the Germans, and to the fall of Nazi Germany.
Back to the weekend’s music. The late BB KING is celebrated Friday night on TV in a concert recorded in 1982. APPALACHIAN MUSIC LEGEND JEAN RITCHIE, GONE AT 92.
Jean Ritchie died on Monday, June 1. The Pasadena Folk Music Society remembered when they booked her for a concert many years back, before they were in existence as the Caltech Folk Music Society, when she still toured.
They wrote this morning, “A few of us remember hearing Jean's wonderful voice, mountain dulcimer, autoharp and guitar in a free, informal show in Caltech's Dabney Hall way back in 1979, well before Brian Toby founded the Folk Music Society. You can see it listed in Caltech's student newspaper, the ‘California Tech,’ in the ‘Caltech Y calendar’ at the bottom on page 2 at http://caltechcampuspubs.library.caltech.edu/1167/1/1979_02_23_80_19.pdf.
“This announcement is from American Folklife Center:
“ ‘We're very sad to pass on the news of the death of Jean Ritchie on Monday, June 1. She was 92 years old. No one was more important to the survival, appreciation, and revival of traditional Appalachian folk music in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries than this ballad singer, songwriter, folksong collector, Fulbright scholar, and champion of the Appalachian dulcimer. The producers of a recent tribute CD to Jean write:
" ‘We are so sad to have to share the news that our beloved Jean passed away on Monday evening. She was surrounded by members of her family, who sang at her bedside in the last hours. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to Appalachian Voices. [ http://www.appalachianvoices.org/ ]’
“ ‘Ritchie was recorded many times for the AFC archive--our first recordings of her go back to 1946. In 2009, she and her late husband, the photographer and filmmaker George Pickow, arranged for their extensive archive of audio and video recordings, film, photographs, and manuscripts—the results of their seven decades of involvement in traditional performances and folklife documentation—to be preserved in the AFC archive. Ritchie, a few years back, gave her endorsement to Southern Cal-based, Kentucky-born musician SUSIE GLAZE. The Pasadena Folk Music Society has a concert booked with Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band on June 13. Susie Glaze sang for Ms. Ritchie at a CD release concert in May, 2014 in Berea, Kentucky. Also on the bill were Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon. “Many fans have told me, that on the Jean Ritchie songs, they can’t tell if it is me or Jean singing,” says Glaze, “Jean herself has told me the same thing.”

FESTIVAL,
in Pasadena:
Annual “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA,” based on France’s “Fete de la Musique,” is an all-day, multi-venue celebration of live music and the people who make it. Mostly free, as it is throughout France (where the entire country goes crazy for it), but a few ticketed events have taken-over the publicity in Pasadena. We’ll bring you a full report before the weekend, but you really should plan to go. You can ride the Gold Line light rail to Memorial Park Station and you’ll be adjacent to two venues with several more in reasonable walking distance, and both the Metro and Foothill buses can get you to several more.

It’s a most impressive line-up of the 30 different stages in all.

The Pasadena Folk Music Society is co-sponsoring the Pasadena Central Library stage in the library’s Donald R. Wright Auditorium, at 285 E Walnut St, at Garfield Av, Pasadena, if you want to stay out of the sun (if you enjoy the sun, catch a show or two here, anyway). Parking in the Library's lot in back can be a challenge, but you may find parking on surrounding streets. If you take the Metro Gold Line light rail, the Library is a 4 block walk from Memorial Park station. This free stage features performances by 11 mostly local performers:

"Banjo Gal” Donna Lynn Caskey honors folk tradition while taking it to sometimes edgy new places. Stretching boundaries comes naturally to Donna Lynn, who received a scholarship for an intensive beginning clawhammer banjo class at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina shortly before leaving her hometown on the coast of Virginia by train for California in 2001. She began writing songs and playing shows three months later. Her heartfelt, engaging performances can inspire audiences to sing along, to weep at a soul-stirring ballad, and to laugh at playful one-liners amidst occasional bouts of tuning.

Susie and her band are celebrating the release of their new CD, but the death of Jean Ritchie on June 1 has made this much more. Ritchie, a few years back, gave her endorsement to Southern Cal-based, Kentucky-born musician SUSIE GLAZE. The Pasadena Folk Music Society already had this concert booked with Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band for June 13, and we can expect some of Ritchie’s songs in tribute.

Susie Glaze sang for Ms. Ritchie at a CD release concert in May, 2014 in Berea, Kentucky. Also on the bill were Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon. “Many fans have told me, that on the Jean Ritchie songs, they can’t tell if it is me or Jean singing,” says Glaze, “Jean herself has told me the same thing.”
